Maintain your drains so you never have to unblock them

A blockage does not form overnight, it builds up over months. Two capfuls a week and one stick a month are enough to never run into one.

Open up a ten-year-old sink pipe: it is no longer round on the inside. A layer of grease and soap has halved its diameter without anything showing. The blockage comes when that layer meets a hair. Remove the layer, and the problem no longer exists.

The method

1

Once a week, in the evening, pour two capfuls of the maintenance product into each drain. Kitchen or bathroom: the deposits are not the same, and neither is the formula.

2

Leave to act for 8 hours, without running any water. That is the difference between a product that works and a product that just passes through.

3

One stick a month in the plughole or drain grate. Running water releases the active ingredients over the days; replace it once it has dissolved.

4

Once a year, put a bucket under the trap, unscrew it, empty it and rinse it.

It drains well, but it smells

That is not a blockage. It is a greasy deposit on the pipe walls, or a dry trap in a room that is rarely used. Run the water for a minute in the guest room or the utility room. If the smell persists, the Drain odour stopper treats the pipe walls at the source: 250 ml the first time, then 2 capfuls (80 ml) per week, leaving it for 6 hours or more without running water. Avoid contact with acid-sensitive surfaces: marble, aluminium, copper, brass, galvanised metals, enamel and damaged surfaces.

If the water is already draining slowly

Switch to a course of treatment: 4 capfuls a day for 3 days, leaving it for 8 hours each time. Then go back to two capfuls a week.

What costs nothing

1

A strainer on the plughole

Hair is the number one cause of blockages in the bathroom. Once caught, it can be removed by hand.

2

Wiped pans

A spoonful of grease on kitchen paper is a spoonful less in the pipe. And never pour frying oil down the sink.

3

Hot water after the washing-up

Thirty seconds. Hot, not boiling: boiling water warps PVC and kills the bacteria downstream.

What difference it makes

One litre of maintenance product lasts about six months for one drain. Compared with unblocking a drain, especially on a Sunday, the maths is quickly done.

The doses for our products are on their packaging, and that is what counts. If swallowed or splashed, call the Poison Centre on +32 70 245 245 and keep the packaging to hand.
