Which drain unblocker: enzymes, bacteria or caustic soda?

There is not one kind of blockage, there are three. The right product depends on just one thing: is the water still getting through?

Almost all blockages are organic: soap, grease, paper, hair. It is not an object stuck in the pipe, it is a deposit that has thickened until it closes the passage. Look at your sink, and pick the card that matches it.

Three situations, three products

1

It drains, but slowly

The pipe is narrowed, not closed. Enzyme formula, free from caustic soda and acid: half a bottle (1/2 litre), at least 8 hours, preferably overnight, then rinse with warm water.

2

It is blocked, the drain is empty

The 3-day course of sachets, the gentlest option. Or the drain unblocker with naturally derived caustic soda: 500 ml, approx. 30 minutes, then hot water.

3

The water is standing

A liquid gets diluted before it reaches the blockage. The gel formula sinks through standing water and works on contact. 500 ml, approx. 30 minutes.

Toilets and macerators

In the toilet, the culprit is paper, not grease. You need cellulase enzymes, which general-purpose unblockers do not contain in large amounts. To unblock: 500 ml of product in 500 ml of warm water, 8 hours, then flush. For prevention on a macerator, 200 ml is enough.

What about the septic tank?

  • Enzyme and bacteria formulas are safe for it, and even boost it.
  • Caustic soda unblockers are suitable for septic tank connections under normal conditions of use, as their technical sheet states. Never mix them with other products.

Two costly mistakes

1

Using two products one after the other. If the first was not enough, rinse thoroughly and wait before trying anything else.

2

Trying a third time. A blockage that survives two full treatments is not organic: an object, a root or a poor pipe gradient. A drain snake or a plumber will get there faster.

And afterwards

An unblocked pipe clogs up again exactly as before. Now is the time to switch to maintenance: two capfuls per week, or one stick per month in the plughole.
